Sentencing Delayed in Mollie Tibbetts Case After Bombshell New Info Emerges
A man scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday to life in prison without parole for killing college student Mollie Tibbetts got a last-minute reprieve on Wednesday in light of bombshell new information pointing to other potential suspects. In May, a jury convicted Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 27, an Iowa dairy farm worker, of first-degree murder in the death of Tibbetts, a 20-year-old student at the University of Iowa. On Wednesday, Judge Joel Yates ordered Bahena Rivera’s sentencing to be delayed after two witnesses independently approached authorities with stories that called into question his involvement in the crime.

Mollie Tibbetts' murder: Iowa judge delays illegal immigrant's sentencing as new witnesses emerge
Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 27, was set to be sentenced to life in prison without parole this week after being convicted in May of murdering University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts, but a judge delayed that sentencing Wednesday due to two new witnesses who have shaken up the case. Tibbets, 20, disappeared in July 2018 while on a run in her hometown of Brooklyn, Iowa. Bahena Rivera, a Mexican national who came to the United States illegally as a teenager, led investigators to her body in a remote cornfield about a month after she vanished and was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder on May 28.
